Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
The game engine that was used in the first Far Cry games, developed by Crytek. It was later succeeded by Cryengine 2
Crystal Tools is a multi-platform game engine created by Square Enix.
Ubisoft's proprietary engine based on a heavily modified CryEngine. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal.
An animation and game development engine prolific during the 2000s and early 2010s. While most titles developed in Flash were browser-exclusive, Flash could also be used for standalone games.
“Indie” or “independently developed” games are video games which are developed by a studio without the support of an external publisher.
Luminous Studio is a proprietary game engine developed by Square Enix.
Capcom's proprietary engine developed for PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.
Pixel art refers to digital images composed of visible pixels, drawn with individual pixel-level intent and precision.
Game mechanics traditionally found in role-playing games that are incorporated into a non-RPG title.
Side-scrolling games present the world as viewed perpendicular to the direction the characters are facing on screen. With a heavy focus on lateral movement, objectives are often met by moving from one end of a stage to the other.
Valve Corporation's proprietary game engine that debuted in summer 2004 with Counter-Strike: Source and later that same year with Half-Life 2. It may be worth noting that the first Source game released a full 2 weeks ahead of Counter-Strike, and that was Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
A game perspective that views the action from above, commonly at a fixed position and/or rotation.
First version of the Unreal engine. Developed for the game, "Unreal".
Vertical scrolling is when the screen scrolls along the y-axis. In a vertical scrolling game the player usually starts from the bottom of the screen and moves up. They are also almost always presented in a top-down perspective.
A sub-genre of adventure games, visual novels are a form of interactive fiction that usually have very little in terms of gameplay but often focus more on extensive storytelling, character interactions, decision-making and branching narratives.
