@sunjammer: you gotta give some slack. Jeff is married, has a second kid, and staff just left. He is working hard to juggle everything and still puts out quality. I say just keep supporting. They never let us down before. Also its a tuff time so experimenting should bring new viewers.

Yeah they're just getting settled into the new office after all

The more I watched it though the more it felt like a glorified Marvel bowling game. The enemies basically exist as pins to be knocked over in as few chains as possible. Reminds me a bit of Crash Mode from Burnout where the combo chains are key to success. I almost wish they did lean more into a typical XCOM design because from what I'm seeing it looks to have more in common with Angry Birds or Boom Blox. I could be wrong and the combat encounters might flow nicely in the finished game. Firaxis do have a knack for some creative enemy types in XCOM but I think they lose some novelty of the property for me if they don't rope in many named villains from the comics.

They showed the gameplay today and this is really what it looked like.

Maybe it ramps up on a higher difficulty but I don't know how far you can go on this set up to really make it tactical. Placement and location kind of IS tactics. To me this game might be a lot about kind of setting up your characters and developing them part most of all, plus seeing heroes do hero stuff like in the comics.

I do think it also has a bit of a styles clash in how kind of grim dark it looks but it actually seems like a goofy comic book feel to a lot of it too. Maybe that will work though.

They're trying to make Giant Bomb a podcast network for I'm not sure what audience and I think is a bad idea.

this thread has really devolved from missing QLs into questioning the value proposition of the site for which there is, and always has been, one solution.

leaving feedback on the forum for said site?

@brian_: People are allowed to be critical of things they pay for. True of games, true of game sites. You dont have to work up a defense of the indefensible, really. This always goes on in these threads but trust me, its never been less necessary or reasonable to do.

Couldn't agree more with all the sentiment others have been putting forth on this. There is NO soul to this site or direction or creativity and the fact that they are not moving in the direction of getting back into a live studio set up, to me, spells certain doom for this whole thing because they have not shown the ability at all to do fun and lively streams in a remote set up. Seeing Nextlander split off and instantly do a lot of the type of shows and streams I want to see is an eye opener as well.

Bringing in outside people to do contracted shows is the opposite of what GB should ever be doing and really makes me wonder what the actual GB guys are doing right now.

There's always been this hostility towards doing what the fans want around here from some folks on staff and it sure has come to a head to make the site what it is now. No long plays, no interesting show formats, no enthusiasm.

And I wonder that because it seems odd to leave GB, if it does indeed remain largely the same, to go and do exactly what GB does elsewhere.

We don't know if that's the case from where we are.

@toughshed: the hand holdy nature is very annoying, but once you get to the big island and can build anywhere it's worth it. And as much as I skipped dialogue and mainlined quests, I found going through each islands little story quite satisfying

The game has charm for sure pretty much throughout. To me I just find that rigidity frustrating. A lot of it is teaching how to build elements, which is great, but given the free form nature more later it can feel by the numbers all leading up.

To me the next step would be to, throughout, embrace more of the sim/builder nature and have it all more free form, yet still try to weave in that character and story more organically that would make the game really special and cohesive.

I've always loved that genre and games like this are coming close to really being that narrative and charcter based version of the genre I've been waiting for to come along more.

This game is pretty fun but the game is way too drawn out, hand holdy and rigidly structured for so long while also not doing enough to incentivize creativity and the building with systems. However, it is still fun and I think DQ Builders 3 can be amazing if it puts it all together.
