Crusaders of the Lost Idols is a side-scrolling incremental (clicking/idle) game developed and published by Codename Entertainment, with an initial release on Facebook and Kongregate on July 23, 2015. The game was released on Steam on Oct. 13, 2015.

The game's story elements take the player and a team of "Crusaders" through various locales, completing objectives in order to earn extra gold and treasure chests that can sometimes contain loot to further improve the characters.

Crusaders of the Lost Idols is a Free to Play game currently supported through microtransactions for treasure chests in a manner similar to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive or the multiplayer portion of Mass Effect 3.

    Gameplay

Similar to many incremental games of its kind, Crusaders of the Lost Idols requires the player to click on monsters to attack them, gather gold on defeat of the monsters and use the gold to buy levels for the clicker player-character or to hire Crusaders that deliver a base amount of damage per second (DPS). The Crusaders can also be leveled, and all characters have certain upgrades at set level milestones that can be purchased with gold to unlock abilities or flat damage boosts to the character or to all members of the party.

The Crusaders and the player-character are placed on a side-scrolling landscape in the formation of bowling pins (four in the back row, three in the row to the right, etc.), with a maximum party size of 10 Crusaders or 9 Crusaders and the clicker player character.

The party formation is one of the twists Crusaders of the Lost Idols provides in its game. Some characters have upgrades that are only in effect when the party is in a certain formation. For example, Emo Werewolf receives a significant DPS boost when no other human Crusaders are next to him in the formation. Other characters fill familiar RPG roles such as Healer, Tank and Buffer through these formation-based upgrades.

This formation setup allows for different combinations that players can use to min-max either base DPS damage or base click damage, to boost certain upgrades, to better prepare for boss battles with damage mitigation and healing, or to farm gold for leveling/upgrading.

The progression through the game involves four normal levels with MMO-style quest objectives requiring special item drops or a certain number of monsters killed. The fifth level in each five-level section of the game's map is a boss wave, and upon defeat of the boss a treasure chest will drop that can contain various consumable buffs, items that increase the effectiveness of Crusaders or the CPC, or lump sums of gold.
