EA really wants to make use of that Spore creator tech. You can really tell Will Wright had nothing to do with this. I think the spore creature maker combined with a humanoid maker (designed by Bioware, say) would make for a good start to a 3d RPG maker. And that at least would feel more in line with Will Wright's philosophy, to an extent.

If the monsters are boring looking, its only because users (like you) design them that way.
So I guess the pattern remains; someone makes a game mechanically identical to Diablo and people are bored with it, yet somehow the exact same gameplay in Diablo is amazing. Blizzard makes a living being the only "good game" in genres full of games that play the same way.

Its not 100% correct that the designer is purely cosmetic ... you do add the stuff you find to your creatures and use the designer to make them look (to a degree) as you want. You cant change the stats of an item by changing the looks of it but you will gain a benefit from attaching them to your guy.

This isn't really a Diablo-clone. I know EA marketers used that term but it's more like League of Legends in campaign mode, for those who can tell the difference. Of course I know why they would name drop Diablo.

I tried the beta and it plays fine though. The hero swapping and shared skill mechanic are what makes this game interesting. However I don't think it's worth more than €20.

Having played the beta, I don't think this is actually possible.

You can take a premade character and fuck around with them a bunch but you can't design one from the ground up. There's no procedural animation like in Spore.

I hadn't even really thought about it, but the nature of the game means having an active internet connection at all times, a la Ubisoft's fun system.  That's actually troublesome for me.

I can't help it, but this game looks boring. It doens't look good (or appealing), it moves slow and it seems to miss the core Diablo gameplay principles. Shame.

This is why I love these guys they put on an awesome quicklook and I sometimes get the same result I want the game! I thought nothing of this game but now seeing how it plays the awesome music and the customization I want it. Thanks GiantBomb for being so fucking awesome!

Looks like a bug-hunt.  Really tired of games that have you squashing little spiders for hours.


Gameplay is mind-numbing to watch, interested to see all that you can do with the creature editor tho...

@Overwatch: from playing the beta some, it starts out pretty slow but after talking to one of the devs in the lobby and other people playing, there are plenty of characters with speed abilities and foot upgrades will make you move faster if thats your gig

This game is meant for coop, if you think the solo is boring... you're right! :D

Everything about this game would make it seem awful.... but after playing it I was astounded. The game gets very in depth very quickly, combines new ideas to a classic genre, and appeals to everything ARPG players love. It's a great game... but no one will get it because they just want Maxis to make another SimCity game..... quite a shame. It is very easy in the start, but it has some near hundred levels and i hear it busts-balls later on

played the beta about a month ago. boring. when ryan mentioned dungeons in the beginning I thought "what dungeons?". I had forgotten all the campaign stuff. generic. forgettable. pvp was more interesting. still boring.


Maxis should just start licensing the Spore tech to other companies. Then someone else can make the truly awesome game the editor deserves.

You know, at some point I think that people should stop even trying to imitate Diablo. Yeah, it's an easy formula to crib from and doesn't require much in the vein of imagination, but come on guys. Only a few specific non-Diablo games have done anything remarkable with Diablo's gameplay.

I'd agree but enough games have done it well (torchlight) that I don't mind the occasional shitty game; it's going to happen in any genre really, and if I get shit along with the gems well the shit can always just be ignored.

You see, I didn't really like Torchlight because of how direct the cribbing is. Every time I consider reinstalling it I'm reminded that Diablo 2 is a better game and then I reconsider reinstalling Diablo 2 but then I'm reminded that none of my friends play Diablo 2 anymore so I forget the whole thing and go back to whatever obscure late 90s-early 00s RPG I was playing.

Which reminds me: Divine Divinity is basically Diablo but open world (and surprisingly difficult), and is an example of how to at the very least make something interesting with that kind of formula without making something super derivative or bland in the process.
