Beauty in the world that is. Hints of the world that was.
Hollow Knight has lots of steamtags relating to “Metorivania” but it is something quite unique. Hollow knight realizes the core concepts of Metorivania games powerups, secrets and gated progression all abound in this title. But what makes it special is the way that it deviates from these typical tropes. Hollow Knight is penetrated by an overwhelming sense of the unknown. Your titular character awakens in a crypt in a world that has seen many better days. To make even worse you don’t have a map, A trend that reoccurs whenever encounter a new area. Wondering blind thru the dead city of bugs past can creates extreme frustration, but also forces you to recognize the fantastic beauty of the world that is and that hints of the world that was.
I’ve spent over 20 hours in the world of Hollow Knight going back and forward searching for secrets in the giant city of hollownest and I though I have had to resort to guides several instances for where to go I am still immensely satisfied with the core experience.
One last note, Hollow Knight is hard. You will die the one area where hollow knight is immensely frustrating is that death also means a loss of carried currency. This is especially a problem early in the game. If you chose to test out hollow knight know that it takes an hour or two before you really start to get a handle or core mechanics .
